I scream, you scream, we all raise our voices for churned dairy items. This carton of Breyers Vanilla Fudge Twirl caught my eye last week in the supermarket. As pretty as the box is I'm interested with what's inside. That's Frozen Food Journal for you: more than skin deep.
Anyway... living up to its name Vanila Fudge Twirl is, wait for it, vanilla ice cream with fudge twirls. And as the picture suggests there's a lot of fudge to be had. Unfortunately this ice cream looks a lot more flavorful than it actually is. The fudge's consistency is closer to ice cream more than a syrup, which probably explains why the taste is subdued. Each bite of Vanilla Fudge Twirl tastes like a muted chocolate ice cream, which I found disappointing. If you're putting fudge into something then go for it.
One plus here is the refreshing aftertaste, much like the kind found in a mint ice cream. I really can't explain why a Vanilla Fudge Twirl ice cream would finish coolly (beyond the obvious fact it's been in the freezer). But there you go.
Breyers prides itself on being an all natural product. A giant green banner tells you so. This particular flavor is made from milk, cream, sugar, whey, natural flavor, natural tara gum, corn syrup, cocoa, cream and salt. Always nice to read an ingredient list and find nothing longer than five six syllables. Nutrition facts and such can be found by dabbling on the Breyers website. A 1/2 cup serving is 130 calories, 6 grams of fat (3.5 saturated) and 15 grams of sugar. This product is Kosher.
Vanilla Fudge Twirl is simultaneously delicious and a letdown. I'm moving onto other churned dairy items and not looking back.
