Review: Deluxe Rocky Road Ice Cream

Rocky Road is my favorite ice cream flavor. So the question is not rather I would enjoy Deluxe Rocky Road Ice Cream but how much I would enjoy it.

The origin of Rocky Road is a rather interesting story. According to Dreyers history:

At the time of Rocky Road’s birth in 1929, almost all ice cream was made in three flavors – vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry – and was always served as sundaes. Dreyer added walnuts (later replaced with almonds) to his chocolate ice cream and, using his wife’s sewing shears, cut marshmallows into bite-sized pieces to make the first batch of Rocky Road. Dreyer and Edy picked a flavor name to give folks something to smile about in the face of the Great Depression.

Maybe Dreyers will unveil Recession Route in 2009. Or not.

So Deluxe's version of this classic contains almond chunks and marshmallow bits. I wish the pieces were bigger and more plentiful. Instead this dessert is mostly comprised of a mediocre chocolate ice cream that could use an extra dose of cream and sugar.

Each 1/2 cup serving contains 160 calories, 8 grams of fat (4 saturated) and 14 grams of sugar along with small amounts of cholesterol and sodium.

It's tough to complain about ice cream. And don't get me wrong, Deluxe Rocky Road tastes good. But at the same time there's thousands of other ice cream options. I suggest skipping this one to see what else is out there.

I'm so in the passenger seat right next to you! We're gonna get some Ice Cream! I'm doing my Bill Cosby imitation in my head right now! It doesn't get any better than Dreyer's/ Edy's Rocky Road for me. That photo looks like, ugh...ice milk. Good in a pinch, but easily passed over when Dreyers/Edys is available.
