Review: Thrifty Ice Cream Chocolate Chip

My childhood is filled with wonderful memories of going into Thrifty Drugs and leaving with a delicious scoop of ice cream or sherbet. In 1998 Thrifty was bought out and became Rite Aid. Since then Rite Aid, understanding the value of a good brand, has continued to sell Thrifty Ice Cream in its stores. Lucky us.

Thrifty Ice Cream is one of the tastiest frozen treats around. Today I decided to review its classic chocolate chip flavor. There is a nostalgia factor that needs to be considered when reading this review. I'm obviously biased for something that brings back happy thoughts from my younger days. Regardless, I'll stick up for Thrifty Ice Cream all day, every day.

The vanilla is velvety, soft, sweet and creamy. Ideal ice cream. But what really takes this dessert to another level are the chocolate chips. They're not even chips really. Rather, each bite is littered of chocolate shavings. Because the pieces are so small and plentiful they melt in your mouth quickly -- and often.

A high price for tastiness. Each half cup serving (if you have the self-control to limit yourself to just that) equals a quarter of your daily recommend saturated fat. Toss a lot of total fat and sugar along with some cholesterol too. Yikes.

Thrifty Ice Cream Chocolate Chip was and still is an exceptional frozen treat. Go to the store and pick up a cone. Or better yet buy a tub and bring it home. Just try not to eat it all in one sitting.
