Review: Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip

A few months ago I reviewed the tasty-but-deceivingly-titled Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream. Today I'm here to discuss the "normal" Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip. And wouldn't you know it, this Plain Jane variety is much better for a couple reasons.

While Smooth & Dreamy ironically had the consistency of drywall this product possesses a much cleaner texture, though it's not exceptional or consistently smooth. In fact, the ice cream is actually a little lumpy. Still it's the smoothest Breyers mint chocolate chip ice cream I've ever had. Is that a half-assed compliment? You bet.

If the texture can be described as "okay" then the flavor deserves a "good" rating. Breyers mint ice cream has a distinctive, clean taste that I've always enjoyed. Not particularly sweet and high on the mint. Refreshing is an apt adjective to describe it.

Usually thick chocolate chips do not win me over. But the bigger pieces help enjoy the deep, rich and slightly bittersweet flavor. They're almost like dark chocolate. I don't know if Breyers chocolate chips are made from a new recipe or if I just never really noticed the robust flavor. Perhaps adding 20% more chips made the difference. Whatever the reason the chocolate chips definitely stood out.

Click here and look under All Natural Original/Mint Chocolate Chip for the nutrition facts and ingredients list. Each 1/2 cup serving contains 150 calories, 8 grams of fat (5g saturated) and 17 grams of sugar. Health benefits include trace amounts of protein, Vitamin A and calcium.

Breyers Mint Chocolate renders the Smooth & Dreamy edition useless. While the ice creams taste similar the overall texture and chocolate chips truly sets this version apart.
